Chipping Away at Chapter Books

Chapter books are sooooo much fun to write. They are 8,000-10,000 words and are designed for kids aged 7-10 who are growing into independent readers. Each chapter is concise, fun or exciting, and ends on a page turner. Chapter books have relatable themes to learn from, and often have some comedy sprinkled in. The characters have distinct personality traits. These were the main parameters I tried to consider as I wrote The Truth About Mr. Hopkins.

The other fun part about chapter books, is that they contain some illustrations to break up the text. My publisher is super cool and asked me for art notes on scene, or motif choices, to be illustrated. I am a writer, not an illustrator. I’m a stick figure kind of artist but I have thoroughly enjoyed offering ideas on what might look beautiful, interesting, funny, or effective in enhancing the story through the art.

I hope you enjoy reading and viewing The Truth About Mr. Hopkins as much as I have enjoyed creating it. I can’t wait to see it come together. If you have any questions about writing chapter books, feel free to reach out to me on the contact page.
